toddy day? >> what's that? >> a little whiskey or coffee. >> that's a hot toddy? >> that's the big drink this year. >> i thought it was something else. thanks for clarifying that mike. >> i will help you with the flu. >> and a lot of other things. >> happy friday everyone. we've got temperatures down in the 30s and low 40s this morning. you thought it was something else too don't deny it right? exactly. let's get you going with a look at your day planner with temperatures which will be climbing slowly through the 40s to about 50 for your high this afternoon and you'll need a jacket. you'll also need something that's going to keep you dry because we've dot chance of showers by lunchtime. better chance some showers and rain this afternoon. and most of us are going to see that. temperatures topping off at 50 by 5:00 still in the upper 40s. but we're going to have a much warmer weekend. 60s both days and perhaps 70s in spots on sunday. clouds in and out of the region overnight and we're mostly cloudy. a few showers in southwestern virginia and heavier rains still in the ohio valley. this is the afternoon and a

quick look at temperatures this morning. down to 32 in frederick and culpeper. la plata is 33. we're at 39 in d.c.. monika samtani, tgif. oh absolutely. everybody and actually the roads are a good reflection of what it looks like early on a friday morning. i'm happy to say. things look good if you're planning to head around the beltway south side of town through oxon hill route 4, route 5, route 301. everything is running smoothly no issues to report from upper marlboro as well. a live look at the beltway at pennsylvania avenue. and if you're heading southbound here or northbound through prince george's county, this is what you have to deal with. not much at all. we'll go back to the maps this time to the other side of town, no problems to report as you come in on the beltway. outer loop side and a live look one more time outside and we're going to take a look at the american legion bridge. west seed of the town here across the -- side of town here across the river. back with more traffic at 5:09. back to you guys. all right, this next story

is reporter involvement. we're going to explain why in a minute. despite the explosion of flu cases, it is not too late to get vaccinated. especially since the flu often stays strong all the way through february. >> while the centers for disease control says most states are experiencing widespread flu cases, that's not a same as the epidemic. delia goncalves joins us to explain. >> reporter: that's a severe form and widespread -- >> really wide. >> reporter: yes. hugely widespread. illnesses, and -- >> you've had several illnesses over the last few weeks. >> reporter: oh my gosh, an epidemic inside of my home. you know doctors are really shying away from using the word epidemic. they don't want to cause hysteria and panic because at this point we're already seeing a lot of folks rushing to their doctors and to the clinics and ers and getting their vaccines. and so we do want to remind folks that this is very

serious. but you know you shouldn't -- you know panic at this point. according to the centers for disease control, 40 states, 44 rather are reporting widespread infection. this year's flu even led to the death of 20 children nationwide. the flu as we know has hit very hard and extremely early doctors say the strain the most severe form of the illness and it led to hundreds of hospitalizations nationwide. and some very busy ers. >> it's on a trajectory relatively early of compared to other seasonal flus. you don't usually see it begin to have that uptick until mid to late january then it peaks january, february and sometimes into march. >> reporter: so the doctor tells us here's a good news the vaccine available now does cover this particular strain of the flu but the vaccines not magic bullets. it's not going to prevent you

from getting sick. at 5:30 some fly issues that some -- supply issues that some places are having so far with the vaccine. >> thanks delia. >> she's used the chocolate raisin cookie antibacterial stuff. >> we are all safe here on the desk. thank you. >> you're welcome. >> okay. >> the producer -- >> well, for -- oh my goodness. this is a serious story. police are asking you to be on the lookout. they're looking for a man who they say escaped washington adventist hospital late wednesday night and there is concern he could be dangerous. he's a 27-year-old and his name is clayton mollantoff. he may have left the area but they are concerned he could become aggressive. investigators say he has a history of picking fights with officers and possibly be carrying a weapon. so if you see him, police say keep your distance but call authorities. here's some good news though for many area parents and students. maryland leads the class when it comes to the latest rankings of the nation's school systems. education week rates the stake

first in the country in its quality counts survey. it still has work to do. it received the highest grade of b. plus. the district ranks 45th though with a c. minus. the national average is a c. plus. we are getting a first look now at the design of a possible new chuck brown memorial and park. the plans call for the chuck brown memorial to go up at lang don park in northwest washington and the tribute to the godfather of go go music was designed by the same firm that designed the howard theater. that came out great. mayor gray presented the plans yesterday and brown's family members and musicians were also on hand for that. >> the park in northeast d.c.. it is 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> and jessica doyle is here with a look at the headlines. good morning. >> good morning, investors are going to start the morning from a pretty good looking perch. how good is it? how about the best peg in about

five years? the s&p 500 stands today at a five year high and you can thank in part decent everyonings coming in during this -- earnings coming in during this earnings season. so that will be one to watch today. and checking the numbers for you -- well, talk about adding insult to injury. get ready to wait a long time for your tax refund if you've been the victim of identity theft. last year the irs said taxpayers who had their identities stolen would have to wait 180 days for their returns to get processed. that's six months. now the agency's watchdog group says victims could face similar wait times this year some may have to wait even longer. you can blame a backlog of paperwork here plus there are 21 separate units within the irs working on these cases. and the agency is trying to

delay's today's arraignment. he's accused of killing 12 people and wounding dozens more and he is charged with 160 felony counts. the national rifle association is blasting the white house after thursday's meeting with vice president joe biden. nra officials say the administration is more concerned with taking away gun rights than protecting children. the white house is meeting with advocates from all sides in the wake to have the newtown school shooting. you can see why passengers might have been a bit startled when they looked out the window of the qantas plane. they may have thought they were extras in the samuel l. jackson movie "snakes on a plane." there's a snake a long one caught between the wing and the body of the plane. this particular python is not poisonous and the snake did freeze to death in the high altitudes so no concern for -- welfare of the passengers. still a little scary. >> wow. if you're counting down the hours until the weekend, well, help out with sneak peeks of the new movies you can see the

finally friday. and we have some 50s. 60s, maybe even a 70 in the forecast. >> sunday is the warm day. actually tomorrow is going to be warm too in the low 60s. how about 25 degrees above average for sunday and then we're going to get back into the 40s by next tuesday and potentially even colder as we head in toward the end of next week and next weekend. winter is not dead just yet. just taking a break. >> a long way to go. >> exactly. the bus stop forecast because temperatures this morning running mainly in the 30s right now. couple of low 40s. but it is a dry morning in spite of the fact that the skies are mostly cloudy and the clouds are going to thicken up. the sunrise at 7:26 we will see the clouds thicken up and give way to some rain and even showers possible by midday but the better chance is afternoon. it will be wet in most areas and 48 at noon and only gets to about 50 for the high with a 5:00 p.m. temperature still in the upper 40s and temperatures aren't going to drop much off tonight because we've got some warmer air moving in. you can see the heavy rains actually from indianapolis down

into western kentucky with showers in eastern ohio to about charleston, west virginia. even in towards southwestern virginia look from raleigh west to roanoke and lynchburg got the echoes showing up. we're going to watch that thicken up through the morning. the cloud cover that is and the rain for the afternoon. the tempts are down in the 30s. in fact a chilly start. gaithersburg 34 along with great falls. centreville you're 36 this morning. burke with you at 36 and andrews is 32. crofton upper marlboro 34 and at reagan national still 39. here's our michael & son weather camera. dark and clear skies at national right now. calm winds and 39 feels like 39 and really we haven't had much windchill to talk about at all this winter. and that -- that may just change here soon. a lot of cold air coming into the rockies but still the arctic stuff really bottles up in canada. you can see the 60s into nashville tonight. bringing in the warm air up from the gulf of mexico region

right through the deep south the tennessee valley. cold air on the backside and that's why we've got the snow flying in the rockies. a great ski season for the northwestern quarter of the country really from colorado all the way to washington state and british columbia. rain much-needed rain here. we need this in a more regular basis. drought conditions have really affected the levels of the mississippi. for us we watch the moisture increase. the rain gets here this afternoon. the warmth will follow starting tonight but watch out tonight lee. some patchy dense fog. today 50 and chilly afternoon showers. tonight we've got the early shower otherwise some patchy dense fog. lows in the low to mid-40s. tomorrow early clouds and fog and then we're dealing with some partly sunny skies. very mild. 62. sunday 68. some areas could get to 70 with some sunshine. rain returns monday and 60 and much cooler rain on tuesday and temperatures back in the 40s. 5:17. monika samtani, she's still smiling. that's good. yes still smiling although

laboring so much and why would a doctor being paid by the redskins make a statement that seemed to throw the franchise under the bus and then backtrack? well, the team is not talking about it anymore. so those answers might be difficult to unearth. what we do know is the season is over, rg3's knee is spaghetti and dr. andrews repaired it. now yesterday the doctor who served as the consultant to griffin says the meniscus was repaired as well. oh by the way dr. andrews didn't mention that in his statement. both however believe griffin can be ready for the season. yesterday on the radio dr. andrews saying quote griffin already waiting on me to start rehab, he's a fine young man and a great talent. we're looking forward to get him ready for next season. denver v. ravens. the senior citizens aarp bowl. 36-year-old peyton manning the mile high hot broncos against baltimore and 37-year-old ray lewis. lewis though oh for the last nine against manning but he

the day planner looking good this morning at the u.s. capitol. by lunchtime a couple of sprinkles developing and 48. we'll have a high of 50 at 5:00 and some light rain in areas and 48 degrees. clouds came real late yesterday gave us a beautiful thursday. it managed to get all the way up to 57 degrees and we have some sprinkles trying to get going here south of i-64 into south central virginia. heavier rains well to the west though and that's the moisture we're looking at for the afternoon. jackets and gloves. la plata 33 and also in the shenandoah valley, and winchester and martinsburg. frederick down to freezing and we sit at 39 going to 50 with afternoon rain expected. 5:29, here comes monika with a look at timesaver traffic. no may job problems this morning -- major problems this morning i'm happy to say. things are great on the beltway and all the major thoroughfares planning to get there. route 32 out of columbia at 39, bw parkway as well no issues at

all. and even route 50 coming in from annapolis. i'll prove it to you. show you what it looks like in silver spring on the north side of town here at georgia avenue. and usually things begin to slow down a bit by about 5:30 in the morning. on the outer loop into silver spring and you may find a few brake lights after new hampshire avenue but really no problem at all here. let's go back to the maps this time to the other side of town on 270. beginning to slow down just a bit near route 109. one more last live look outside and if you're planning to head over to the inbound side of i- 66, here's what it looks like in centreville. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 5:38. back to you guys. thank you. if you haven't -- or anyone in the family hasn't caught the flu yet consider yourself lucky and here's two suggestions. cross your fingers and wash your hands a lot. because now a lot of states almost every one of them in fact are reporting widespread influenza cases. >> while state health departments in the area say there should be enough vaccine on hand the spike in demand means you may not be able to walk into every pharmacy to get a shot.

delia goncalves is in the satellite center with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning mike, andrea roane. there's no nationwide shortage of the flu vaccine. very important to let folks know because there have been some contradictory reports that there were some shortages. however, there are plenty of vaccines to go around nationwide. simply there were a couple of shipment delays because so many folks are rushing to pharmacies to get their flu shots. so basically, these stores were blowing through their inventory before you could get there. so word of advice? call ahead before you head to the pharmacy. med immune a manufacturer of flu mist produced 12 million doses. there were temporary delays in new shipments of tamiflu but stores we're told are now restilling the stock of the oral -- refilling their stock of the oral vaccine. doctors say this strain of h 3 n 2 is the most severe but it's

still covered by this inoculation. however, remember the flu shot is only 90% effective. >> so you might get vaccinated and still get the flu. and you hear many people that say that. well, i got vaccinated and i actually got the flu. but if you look at the effect of the vaccine it probably greatly dampened the illness and the severity of the illness. >> reporter: so we've heard that a lot over the years people say well, i got the flu vaccine and i got sick a week later. so i don't get the flu vaccine and that could lead to why 50% of americans only get inoculated and so doctors are urging folks you may still get sick. but you won't get a severe case of the flu so it's important to head out and get that flu shot vaccines are still available and there's still plenty of time to prevent this illness. back to you. >> all right, delia goncalves we want to add a little bit more to what she's been telling us. to keep you from running from store to store, look for the

flu vaccine. looking for the flu vaccine we have a flu vaccine finder on our website at wusa9.com. now it's very simple. just put in your zip code and a list of stores reporting they have the vaccine will pop up. you can even specify the type of flu vaccine you're looking for. while the vaccine finder is a great tool keep in mind a lot of people are doing the same thing. they're searching for the same vaccine you are so you definitely want to call ahead to see how much supply the store has. you might want to call while you're sitting in your car or on the cell phone outside the providers the make sure you get in before the other guys is doing the same thing you are. >> it's a good plan. now this morning defense attorneys are going to ask a judge to reconsider the case of yonathan melaku. he's the 25-year-old former marine who has pleaded guilty to shooting at the pentagon and other buildings in northern virginia. no one was hurt in these shootings but his legal team says that after he was

sentenced to 25 years in prison, government doctors diagnosed him with a mental illness. and they want a judge to reconsider the sentence. the outgoing secretary of defense is sounding a warning about the congressional budget fights. leon panetta says the pentagon is making preparations in case automatic budget cuts take effect. the cuts were delayed two months by the fiscal cliff deal reached earlier this month. but lawmakers are also expected to butt heads over raising the debt ceiling. which raises the possibility of a government shutdown. >> this fiscal uncertainty has become a very serious threat to our national security. >> we actually are growing, we've expanded. we've continued to go through these months. but if there's a shutdown, that would be an abrupt stop. >> steve charles cofounded contractor the group and he says there would be layoffs if the government isn't in a position to re-up contracts or award new ones in the next few

months. other defense companies instituted hiring freezes while they wait to see what happens. its is 5:35. time for another your money report now. >> and jessica doyle is back with a look at the local economic future. >> that's right. that's right. well remember when it was easy to find a job and you could sell your house with relative ease? the hard part was actually bidding on a new house. it hasn't been like in a really long time. we've gotten used to the new normal economy that's slowly mugging along and really don't expect the new normal to go away anytime soon. a new forecast is out from the centers for regional analysis at george mason university and it predicts the washington area economy has two more tough years ahead. very little improvement in economic growth expected this year and when it does start to pick up speed next year, the economy won't be the same one we used to have. the center predicts the local economy is growing somewhat less dependent on federal government and private hiring. it's starting the take the lead here.

now taking a look at the job numbers the region was -- rather is expected to lose 22,000 federal jobs by 2017. a lot of that is due to the spending cuts we're expecting out of congress but in a ways this good news because economists were originally predicting 450,000 jobs to be lost. at the same time, the washington region will still have a net gain of 281,000 new jobs by 2017. most of those are coming in the private sector and not related to the federal government. and a rebound in the housing sector will lead part of the way. the center sees about 55,000 new construction jobs being added by 2017. this is not a terrible economic outlook. we have some good news thrown in here but set your sights on 2015 before the local economy will really start firing up based on these forecasts. so much of that has to do with the debt ceiling and the debates we've seen in congress. >> slow growth. >> our hands almost.

but what you see that's some shower activity which is moving up toward the north northeast. and that's why this afternoon we've got rain in the forecast. this morning though it's a cold one. 32 in culpeper and frederick and 30 manassas at last check with winchester and cumberland at 37. lower 30s even down to the northern neck. so pockets of frost abound. outside on our michael & son weather camera, it's a good looking shot of washington, d.c.. the capitol dome shining brightly and proudly. 39 degrees under clear skies and no wind. so feels very comfortable. this is another comfortably cold morning with temperatures down in the 30s. but not so comfortable out in the rockies with 8 in great falls and salt lake is 22. the cold air is coming down in the west but in the east we have the warmth coming up. nashville 63-degrees at this hour. that's ahead of a storm system for tomorrow and especially on sunday that's going to bring warmth to us. rain and showers and thunderstorms associated with this system. out west we have the snow

flying from montana all the way down into arizona and colorado. ski areas very happy. we've got the showers in the gulf of mexico. the heavier stuff though the ohio valley headed toward toledo and detroit this morning. for us, we're watching some clouds this will be thickening up as this moisture heads our way. especially even by lunchtime. be some showers in western maryland and down to the south to fredericksburg and richmond. then in the afternoon by 2:15, scattered showers abound and that will be with us for the afternoon rush. with a little bit of luck we can get rid of most of this by 5:00 except for the bay and areas east. tonight, well we'll get rid of the showers and we'll turn foggy overnight. and that's how we'll start saturday but the warmer air will keep us in the 40s for overnight lows. here's a look at your forecast. 50 degrees this afternoon with the afternoon showers. and then evening showers. then the fog overnight and in the 40s. and tomorrow early clouds and fog. 62. sunday 68. clouds mixing with some sunshine. by monday, some rain returns and 60. tuesday a colder rain 48.

thanks monika. making news now at 5:50, police in california say a teenaged gunman planned his attack for a year because he had been bullied. the 16-year-old suspect is atuesdayed of shooting at -- accused of shooting at two tunes and one husband -- students and one was hit and critically wounded. a teacher and staff member convinced the teen to put down the shotgun. authorities are putting some extra road crews in the hilly areas near puget sound where a degree or two difference in temperature determines who got snow. the worry is that the mix of snow and the slush on the roads is going to freeze up before the morning rush hour there. later this morning afghan president karzai will meet president obama at the white house. karzai met separately with defense secretary leon panetta and secretary of state hillary clinton. he's been discussing the transition as u.s. troops withdraw from afghanistan this year and next year. today two members of the d.c. council will also headed to the white house.

council chair phil mendelson and mary chae will meet with the intergovernmental affairs staff. they're hoping to put the taxation without representation license plates on the inaugural parade limo. president clinton is the last president to have used the taxation without representation plates. well, it is just ten days until the presidential inauguration and obviously the parade that goes with it. january 21st is when that happens and there's a company in prince george's county is doing their best to work quickly. the what are grove company has been making the floats for the last 17 parades all the way bang to the trueman administration. this year they're building eight floats involving everything from metal work to wood and sewing. incredibly they got the contract for the job this late december -- in late december and they are hustling. >> we're honored we're selected to represent the country. and that they trust us to pull off one of the major events held every four years. >> they have their own major event.

and a good friday morning. it is a chilly morning out there. but it's a nice morning. light wind. temperatures down in the 30s in most areas. clouds are going to be thickening up rather quickly. i think a pretty sunrise and after that we turn cloudy. by lunchtime some showers start to pop up south and west of town. looks like a wet afternoon by 3:00 48. that high around 50 and with a little bit of luck, we'll get rid of the showers and most of them here by 6:00 p.m. so that that n evening we'll just see some fog settling in. monika over to you. time to take a look at some of the new movies in theaters this weekend. this one had its d.c. premiere tuesday night at the newseum. it's "zero dark thirty" which dramatizes the story of the hunt for osama bin laden.
